Week 6 (Late Post) Web Design

I missed the first class of the 2nd half of this course because I was sick. But what I was able to deduct is that first we were creating a basic website using raw html (Hyper Text Mark up Language?) which is basically a bunch of code. This can be done using any word processing software.

This is what I had achieved in the first class, not great but not exactly losing track of things yet.

Week 5 (Ideas)

So even though I'd been collecting creative commons video for the last week or so, I didn't even really have an idea of what to do, all I knew was that I wanted to mix animation with real life.

I found a video which I was gonna base the rest of my videos around at www.deadmandrinking.com on the website it said the movie was licensed under a creative commons 3.0 license, so I could edit and remix it. But on the video itself there was a warning that said it wasn't able to be remixed.

So with that idea out the window I went with another idea, with the video "Nasty Old People" I was gonna take the audio and some of the video to mix it with animation clips.

The audio was crucial to make this video work but when I put the video into vegas I didn't get any audio

I tried multiple things to try and get the audio to work. Re-encoding, extracting, converting and none of it worked. So eventually I played the video using VLC and put a mic next to the speakers and recorded the audio.

After I got past that roadblock the rest of the video was pretty easy. Just finding the bits of the videos to fit the audio was time consuming.

Week 3 (Late Post) Timecode/Subclips/Non Destructive Editing

This week we learned about how a timecode is set up (the little clock in FCP)

It looks like
00:00:00:00 or HH:MM:SS:FF or Hours:Minutes:Seconds:Frames

The timecode is helpful for when you need to trim or clip a large video. You can choose the start and finishing timecode and cut out between them.

You can do this in FCP (although I used Sony Vegas) by putting the clip into the trimmer window the setting the start keyframe (key I in Vegas i think it may be the same in FCP) scrolling through till the part of the video you want the setting your end keyframe (O in Vegas) then you can create a subclip.

Week 2/Weekly Progress

In class we were instructed to convert our videos all to the same codec using the program mpeg stream. This was to (in theory) make it easier for Final Cut Pro to recognise and render videos. Because if our videos were all different file types and codecs it would slow Final Cut Pro. However when I put my downloaded movie into mpeg stream it wouldn't convert my video, saying it couldn't find the codec. Will Tinapple suggested putting it into Garage Band to reconvert it, unfortunately no such luck.

It wasn't until I went home and downloaded mpeg stream onto my own computer (using the windows version as opposed to the macs) that I was able to encode my videos.

During the second part of class we had to import our videos into Final Cut Pro. Then as a part of our first class task we had to rearrange the clip, change the opacity of the top clip, add a second video track and flip it vertically, then rendering it into a quicktime movie or .mov file.

But because of my in class encoding problem I didn't do this until I got home, but instead of using final cut pro I used Sony Vegas Pro 10.0

Intro/Day One

So I'm Kate Hatton and I am enrolled in Charles Darwin, this particular class being New Media Intermediate Studio or NMD201.


As a part of the class outline I will be required to create a remix mash up video using Final Cut Pro, gathering my sources from creative commons.


In the first class last week it was our first task to find a creative commons video. The best creative commons video to use is CC BY which means I can basically use it for anything (do anything to it and even use it comercially) as long as I credit the original video and its creators.


Through a bit of google searching I found a website www.sintel.org which is dedicated to a 15 minute shirt film of the same name. This movie (and a few others I've found under the same organization which I will list further down) was created specifically to be licenced under the creative commons 3.0 so it can be reused, remixed etc. 


http://www.blender.org/features-gallery/blender-open-projects/ has the movies that have been created under Creative Commons. This is a quote from the website "Blender Foundation has organized four projects to validate and improve the 3D open source content creation pipeline with Blender. For each project the best artists of the Blender community were invited to come to Amsterdam to work 7-12 months in a well equipped studio on a professional and exciting target. The results and all artwork created for making it, were released under the Creative Commons."
